The Supreme Court has voiced serious concerns about the Hindu Marriage Act.

''The act has broken more homes than uniting,'' it said adding that even at the time of marriages divorce petitions are being filed.

It further added that this was having a disastrous effect on children of families with broken homes.

The Hindu Marriage Act, which came into effect in 1955, had undergone several amendments till 2003 and one of its provisions includes divorce - a concept the court said has evolved from the English law.
